"With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commision in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed. I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword......" Letter to his Sister 1861.
(Image Rick Timmons)Robert E. Lee was a confederate....get it.....he fought for the South. He was a true Virginian and married a foster child of George Washington....our first president. These two love birds had a plantation on what is today Arlington Cemetery. However they left there after the breakout of the Civil War.....where he stated the above quote; denying the Union of his services. He couldnt fight against "home." At that time there was a law established in Virginia that stated if you didnt pay your property taxes in person....you would loose the property. He did just that when he nor his wife could face the dangers of going back into D.C. after the war had broke out......losing everything. To get back at Lee the Union started to bury the men that died in the war on his land......hence the reason for the cemetery.
I respect this man for his ability to make choices and stand by the consequences. I am working in Virginia this week......all I can think about is all the history that happened here and the difficult yet joyous journeys many of our early Americans lived through. I wish I had extra time to see many of the things I have read in books...... as I pass exit after exit..... I wish I could stop........yet I still long for something me and Mr. Lee have in common..."home."
